Experience Grand Sumo Through the Eyes of Sumo Sensei
Most visitors leave a sumo tournament saying, "That was really interesting."
My goal is for you to leave saying, "Now I understand why people fall in love with sumo."
Anyone can buy a ticket to a Grand Sumo Tournament. But without someone there to explain what's happening, it's easy to miss many of the traditions, stories, and little details that make sumo one of the most fascinating sports in the world.
This tour is designed to change that. Rather than simply watching the tournament, you'll experience it alongside Sumo Sensei, gaining the knowledge and perspective that transforms every match into something far more meaningful.
Whether this is your very first tournament or you're returning for another visit, my goal is simple: to help you understand, appreciate, and truly enjoy Japan's national sport.
Why Choose This Tour?
🎌 Start the Day with the Inside Story
Before we head into Ryogoku Kokugikan, we'll meet just outside the arena for a relaxed introduction to the world of professional sumo. I'll walk you through everything you need to know — from the tournament format and ranking system to the traditions, rituals, and wrestlers you'll be watching later that afternoon. It's also the perfect time to ask questions, so you'll enter the arena with a better understanding of what you're about to see.
🎙️ Experience the Tournament Differently
Once the matches begin, everything we've talked about starts coming to life. Throughout the Juryo and Makuuchi divisions, I'll provide live commentary, point out details that are easy to miss, introduce the wrestlers competing that day, explain the traditions taking place before each bout, and share stories that make every match even more exciting.
Instead of wondering what's happening, you'll be able to follow the action and appreciate the details that make sumo so unique.
👥 Small Groups, Big Difference
With a maximum of just 4 guests, this is a much more personal and interactive way to experience a sumo tournament. Questions are always welcome, and we'll have plenty of opportunities to chat about the matches, wrestlers, and traditions throughout the afternoon. During breaks, you'll also have time to grab food or drinks, browse the souvenir shops, and explore Kokugikan at your own pace.
Your Day at the Tournament
We'll meet at 1:00 PM at a quiet location, just a short walk from Ryogoku Kokugikan. We'll begin with a relaxed introduction to the fascinating world of professional sumo. I'll walk you through the tournament format, ranking system, traditions, rituals, and some of the key wrestlers and stories to look out for that afternoon.
This is also the perfect time to ask questions and get familiar with the world of sumo before the action begins.
We'll then make our way together to Ryogoku Kokugikan and head inside in time for the exciting Juryo division.
Once the matches begin, I'll help you follow the action and understand what's happening around you, from the wrestlers' pre-bout rituals and different fighting styles to the stories and rivalries that make each match more meaningful.
As the afternoon progresses into the Makuuchi division, you'll have the chance to see some of the sport's biggest stars and experience the unique atmosphere of a live professional sumo tournament. Throughout the afternoon, I'll be there to answer your questions, highlight details that are easy to miss, and help bring the world of sumo to life.
More Than Just Watching Sumo
When I attended my first Grand Sumo Tournament, I was fascinated by everything happening around me. The atmosphere, the traditions, the energy inside the arena, it was unlike anything I'd ever experienced. The more I learned about sumo, the more I realized that every ceremony, every ritual, and every wrestler had a story worth knowing.
That's what inspired me to create Sumo Sensei. Today, I share my passion for sumo through Sumo Sensei, an educational social media page followed by thousands of sumo fans around the world. My mission is simple: to help people from around the world experience sumo in a way that's welcoming, exciting, and unforgettable.
I hope that by the end of this tour, you won't just have watched Japan's national sport. You'll understand it. And maybe, just maybe... You'll leave Ryogoku as a sumo fan.
